There are many different types of wood chippers. Clarks Tree Surgeons use a TP760. This is a wood chipper that takes branches up to ten inches in diameter.
Wood chippers should only be used by trained personnel.
People should receive adequate training to ensure the safe operation of the machine. Precautions should be followed when setting up, using, maintaining and cleaning the machine, also, during the transportation of the wood chipper. New operations will require supervision and training to ensure that they understand. They should be made to read the instruction manual which is available at all times.
The chipper should be set on a firm level surface, with no obstruction in its place. The machine should be secured by pulling up the parking brake, and a sign giving traffic warning if the chipper is near. The chipper should not be positioned so that operators have to stand on a slope, and the funnel should be pointed away from any workers or people in the area, especially near roadsides.
The right clothing should be worn. Gloves should be close fitting to the wrist, so that they do not catch on any branches. When you start work you should check that all guards are in place, and the feed control is functioning properly. The material that you feed in should be free of stones, and most of all do not reach into the chute, or push branches in with your foot.
