Disease Identification

Identifying tree disease and decay involves a survey of the tree. The Arborist will be looking for fungal fruiting bodies indicating possible wood rot, depending in the fungus.

To find out how structurally rotten the tree is, there are electronic devices available to the Arborist e.g. Arborsonic, which uses ultrasound to give a reading of decay. Also, an Increment Borer could be used. This has a hollow device which is used for the extraction of a radial core of wood. These are just some of the devices available to the Arborist of today.

Fungal fruiting bodies are usually only noticed during September and October, which are obvious to the eye. However, when they are not present, the leaves and crown die back are good indicators to tree decay. An experienced Arborist will pick up these signs and act accordingly.
